Invitation

Welcome to the website for the Australian Entomological Society Conference for Hobart 2024.

The AES conference has not visited Tasmania for over a decade, and we are thrilled to welcome you all once again to our beautiful island, home to many fascinating insects and invertebrates. Whether you’re sipping our award-winning pinot noir, chasing moths on top of kunanyi, nibbling on some local cheeses on Bruny Island or just catching up with old friends, we’re confident you’ll have a wonderful trip. It doesn’t matter if you’ve crossed the Bass Strait a hundred times, or are making your first visit, the 2024 AES Hobart conference will have something for everyone.

Entomology is a broad discipline, and it is hard to think of a single theme that reflects our diverse interests and expertise. However, we are united in at least two things. Firstly, we all love insects! And secondly, we are all on a similar journey. Whether you’re a PhD student, a veteran of 30+ years, or are returning from a career break, your story, knowledge, and passions are worth celebrating and sharing. The theme of our conference hopes to reflect this: Entomology, in all its life stages! We aim to use this conference to bring all our members together and make meaningful and supportive connections across career stages, backgrounds, and disciplines. So, whether you’re a promising grub, a diapausing pupa, or a fully-fledged golden stag beetle, we hope that you’ll meet others just like yourself, people who are a few steps ahead and those who are following your path. Whatever your life stage, we are lucky to have you.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Jonathan Finch
Conference Convenor

The Ian Mackerras Medal
The Society’s award for excellence in entomology at mid career will be the Ian Mackerras Medal and is given every two years (even years) to a member of the Society who is judged by the Board as being mid career and who has demonstrated excellence in entomology over many years.

The award is named in honour of Dr Ian Mackerras, the Society’s first President and an entomologist who embodied the excellence in entomological pursuits that the award recognises.

The Phil Carne Prize
The Society’s Phil Carne Prize is aimed at fostering high quality entomological research in young scientists. The name of the prize celebrates contributions made by Dr Phil Carne to the science of entomology and the Australian Entomological Society.

Photographic Competition

We are pleased to advise the AES Photographic Competition will be run again in conjunction with the 2024 AES Conference.

Field Trip – Tahune Forest

Thursday, 21 November | 10:00 – 16:30

Tickets for the field trip can be purchased during the registration process for $95, includes transport and catering.

Itinerary:

10.00am – Bus departs Old Woolstore Apartments
Delegates to meet outside Old Woolstore Apartments at 9.45am
11.30am – Arrive at Tahune Forest
12.00pm – Lunch Break
3.00pm – Light refreshments at Willie Smith’s.
4.30pm – Bus returns back to Old Woolstore Apartments

Due to road closures on Kunanyi/Mt Wellington, we’ve had to adjust our planned Field Trip. The new destination is the stunning Tahune Forest, located in the heart of the Huon Valley.

The Tahune Forest is a famous landmark in Tasmania’s Southern Forests, where the Huon and Picton Rivers join at the edge of the Southwestern World Heritage Area. These are the Southern Hemisphere’s largest and tallest forest species, and contain one of the candidates for the oldest known living tree species.

We will have the opportunity to enter this uniquely Tasmania forest where we will see ancient Huon Pines, Southern Hemisphere rainforest species, and an aerial canopy walkway. Adjacent to Tahune is the Warra Long Term Ecological Research Site, possibly the best-studied forest entomology site in Tasmania.

The tour includes catering with snacks and a light lunch to sustain you through the field trip. We’ll conclude the day with light refreshments (at your own expense) at Willie Smith’s, offering the perfect opportunity to reflect on the day’s discoveries before returning to Hobart. This tour promises to be both educational and inspiring, offering in-depth insights into the ecological wonders of Tasmania.
