Peter McQuillan’s interest in insects began at eclosion. After graduation (Waite Institute) he worked at Tasmanian Department of Agriculture, where under Bob Hardy, he focussed on pasture pests and quarantine identifications. His PhD at UTAS addressed the ecology and host plant relationships of root-feeding cockchafers. Peter then joined the Centre for Environmental Studies at UTAS, lecturing and researching conservation, pollination ecology and the Gonwanan insect fauna. He promotes the extraordinary wilderness of Tasmania through advocacy in court cases, public lectures and Citizen Science projects. He has co-written popular books on the identification and biology of moths, butterflies, caterpillars and pasture pests. In retirement he studies alpine insects and is always up for more fieldwork
