We are delighted to welcome you to the Combined Forum for Operational Oceanography (FOO) and Australian Coastal and Oceans Modelling and Observations (ACOMO) Workshop 2022.

The combined workshop will be held at:
Esplanade Hotel Fremantle by Rydges, WA from the 21 – 23 November 2022.

The theme for the combined workshop this year is ‘Improving Integration to Optimise Operational Outcomes’.
Our goal for this meeting is to stimulate debate about ways that our observations, and outputs from the models into which they flow, can be used to support maritime safety and security, maximise the productivity of marine industries while minimising environmental impacts, and assist in the management of biodiversity and coastal environments.

The combined workshop will feature invited speakers, submitted abstract presentations and finish with a panel discussion on the following topic:

How can we integrate existing models to develop a skillful National Scale Prediction System?

PANEL

How can we integrate existing models to develop a skilful National Scale Prediction System?

The Australian ocean modelling community have applied a diverse range of models that have predictive skill from littoral to global scales, spanning time periods ranging from hours through to years. Decision makers in the coastal zone require skilful predictions to inform everything from daily port operations, through to extreme value predictions for infrastructure investments. There is currently no integrated system for the Australian region that allows for the discovery, and use of these prediction systems.

The National Marine Science Plan (NMSP: https://www.marinescience.net.au/nationalmarinescienceplan/ ) has recognised this deficiency and proposed the following recommendation: “Create a National Oceanographic Modelling System to supply the accurate, detailed knowledge and predictions of ocean state that defence, industry and government need.”

The purpose of this panel discussion is to share ideas on how we can leverage and integrate existing, emerging and proposed systems into a National Scale Coastal Prediction system, that can be used by industry, the education and research sector, PFRA and other blue economy sectors.

Discussion topics will relate to:
• End user needs
• System Design
• Requisite Service level
• Funding the system
• Research to operations path
• Forming a community
• Emergent topics that will be captured over the course of the meeting
