Recent developments at ACCESS-NRI: from global to regional ocean modelling
We are developing the next-generation ACCESS-OM3 (ocean numerical model) suite, featuring state-of-the-art ocean and sea ice models (MOM6 and CICE6), optionally coupled to surface waves (WaveWatch III) and ocean biogeochemistry (WOMBAT-lite) models, with global resolutions of 100km, 25km, 8km and 4km, and regional higher-resolution configurations. This suite will enable new science, including studies of ice-shelf cavity circulation and wave-sea ice coupling. Results will be presented from ACCESS-OM3 development so far, including introducing ACCESS-rOM3 (regional MOM6 configurations) which are built off the ACCESS-OM3 global modelling developments and infrastructure. An example of a regional 4km Australia-wide regional ocean model will be shown along with a regional Tasmanian test domain with WOMBAT-lite biogeochemistry. There is a complex range of regional and coastal processes to be captured in ocean models which necessitates the diversity in ocean modelling codes used throughout the Australian regional and coastal modelling community. Model agnostic workflows are being developed to enable effective collaboration across diverse modelling codes, processes and scales. Shared model-agnostic scripts are being developed to enable streamlined analysis across model codes and reduce double-up of effort. Strategies to share configurations and development across the different modelling codes are also being formed. This currently includes workflows to develop and share regional MOM6 (ACCESS-rOM3) and ROMS model configurations with the capability to include other model codes in this workflow.
Biography:
Helen has spent her career modelling regional and coastal oceans in Australia, New Zealand and Antarctica. She grew up and studied in Australia but has spent most of the last decade in New Zealand, developing models for New Zealand regional seas for scientific and commercial applications. She has recently moved back to Australia to lead the regional coastal and ocean modelling group at ACCESS-NRI.
