Abstract:
Successful conservation outcomes for threatened fauna are reliant on having a detailed ecological and biological understanding of the target species. Many of the fauna listed on Tasmania’s Threatened Species Protection Act (TSPA) in 1995 were included despite significant knowledge deficits, making improving conservation status difficult. Determining aspects of the natural history of some invertebrate taxa can be challenging, particularly for rarely encountered or cryptic species, such as the carabid Catadromus lacordairei. Listed as vulnerable on the TSPA, but more common across the Australian mainland, the species is thought to be in decline across its range as a result of anthropogenic landscape changes yet has received little research attention. Here we detail the biology and ecology of Catadromus lacordairei for the first time and discuss the potential application of our findings to improve conservation management and outcomes for the species in Tasmania and beyond.
