Alex is a PhD candidate in the School of Languages and Linguistics and a Research Fellow with the Indigenous Law and Justice Hub at the University of Melbourne. He has practised law in Victoria and the Northern Territory, particularly working in circuit courts in East Arnhem Land with Yolŋu and Warnindilyakwa people. As a white settler person, Alex has a range of experience of learning cross-culturally with Aboriginal experts in language and law about justice, communication, translation and interpreting, in the Northern Territory and Western Australia. He has prepared forensic linguistic opinions about communication with Aboriginal people for courts in several Australian jurisdictions. His research focuses on cross cultural communication about law and justice in the context of monolingual and colonial assumptions.
