As a Pacific woman of Fijian descent, Dr Aumua’s career has focused on improving the livelihoods of Pacific people, working in over 20 countries. She became CEO of The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ in January 2021. The Foundation’s mission is to end avoidable blindness and vision impairment in the Pacific by partnering with Ministries of Health and universities to train eye care professionals and strengthen eye health systems.
Dr Aumua has been the Deputy Director-General of The Pacific Community, the World Health Organization Representative for the Solomon Islands, held positions with Queensland and Curtin universities, and was Chief Advisor for the Pacific within New Zealand’s Ministry of Health.
Dr Aumua serves on the Advisory Boards of Pacific Women Lead and Australia Pacific Security College, and on the Policy Advisory Council for the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research. Dr Aumua holds a PHD in Public Policy from Curtin University.
