The Honourable Justice Kristina Stern
The Hon. Justice Stern was sworn in as a Judge of the NSW Supreme Court and a Judge of Appeal of the NSW Court of Appeal on 8 June 2023.
Her Honour commenced practice as a solicitor in Victoria, before moving to England where she completed a PhD at Cambridge University. Her Honour lectured in law at King’s College London then practised as a barrister in London for ten years with a broad-based practice that included human rights and general public law, common law and commercial work.
In 2006, Justice Stern moved to the Sydney Bar. Whilst at the bar her Honour maintained a wide practice, mainly in commercial, administrative and constitutional law. Her Honour appeared on numerous occasions in the High Court including in Momcilovic v The Queen, Hobart International Airport v Clarence City Council, Bywater v Federal Commissioner of Taxation and Mount Bruce Mining v Wright Prospecting and was instructed on behalf of the Australian Human Rights Commission in Comcare v Banerji and Smethurst v Commissioner of Police.
She was chair of the NSW Bar Association Inquests and Inquiries Committee and was regularly briefed in high profile inquests and fire inquiries.
She has also written and presented extensively in the fields of public and commercial law.
